I prefer using a cd to install my operating system instead of a flash drive, so I like the cd drive.

Eh, I guess I prefer that too, matthewt, and I suppose if you actually buy your games, it would be RATHER helpful to have one. I just haven’t used mine in my current computer in a few months.

Why was I the only one that wrote a description in the description field instead of just copy-pasting the name from newegg? Was that what was expected or what?

Either one is acceptable - It’s nice to be able to glance and see what components are used, but your rationale is good as well. It won’t disqualify you or anything. If you’d like to get more traffic for your page add it to stumbleupon.com. It takes a couple minutes to register, but you could get over 100,000 visitors to this page(as other pages on this site have gotten from stumbleupon)

I’m plenty familiar with stumbleupon, and it’s already added, don’t worry. I really don’t expect very many hits from stumbleupon, though.

Geforce 8600 128-bit? Good luck playing any sort of game on this one.

It’ll run anything short of Crysis on at least medium settings, MattressGiant, so I really don’t know what you mean. Besides, 2nd place in votes right now has a GeForce 8400 and the next few places are only spending $15-$50 more. A $500 computer can’t spend half of that on a damn video card and expect to do well overall.

I have no idea how this build is in first. Not only did he not list the item descriptions, but the picks were just awful.

GPU: 256mb 128-bit… You might be able to run Starcraft on full settings. Beyond that, good luck running anything recent on low-med settings, not to mention anything that comes out in the future.

Ok, so maybe this isn’t a gaming build? Then surely you’d be able to store all of your videos or music right? Wrong.

HD: 160GB 8mb cache…

Alright, at least I can burn CDs and DVDs… wrong again.

Optical: He picked a combo drive. Spend the extra $6 on a DVD-R… cmon now.

Other thoughts.

CPU: $5 short of a Core 2 Quad… think this through people.

Case+PSU: Overpriced, PSU is probably bad (notice it doesn’t mention any specs on the PSU), AND WHAT IS THAT RAINBOW THING ON THE FRONT?! Who wants that on their case, honestly?!

Take a look at a real build: http://byopc.com/2008/06/25/500-gaming-rig/

Oh hey, I noticed you seem a little biased there. GPU isn’t half as bad as you claim, I said in the description that I think an HD larger than that is redundant, and AGAIN, in the description, I said that I don’t value the optical drive. Case criticism is subjective, claiming that the PSU is “probably bad” without evidence is ridiculous, and you just so happen to link yours as a “real build”. But thanks for bumping me further up the most commented list, even if you couldn’t have a bit of sportsmanship.

Oh, I forgot to mention, Mattress, but I actually did have another video card I would’ve preferred but it was PCI Express 2.0 and I would’ve had to upgrade my motherboard to use it, and that would’ve brought me over $500. That’s part of the reason why it’s a less than optimal video card.

MatressGiant, chill out. This isn’t supposed to be a super mega awesome gaming rig, its a nice rig for a college student or an average joe looking to play a game or two. Persoanlly this is one of the better builds on this site, and you deserve to win.

He’s just homing in on me because I’ve spent a few hours getting people to vote for me, obviously. Thanks for the support anyway, matt.

Hey matres, if you keep being a dick I’m going to have to ban you. Constructive criticism is cool, being a douche, not so much

“GPU isn’t half as bad as you claim…”
Its better than an onboard GPU.. and even if you want a card with these specs (god knows why) you can get them for a third of the price of this one.

“I said in the description that I think an HD larger than that is redundant…”
Redundant? A HD would be redundant if it were used for backup. Assuming you think that anything larger than 160gb is unecessary*? I believe that many will disagree.

“I said that I don’t value the optical drive…”
LoL?

“claiming that the PSU is “probably bad” without evidence is ridiculous…”
Not so much. When NO INFORMATION is posted about something, I’d be a little suspicious.

If you are going to make a build claiming its not necessarily a gaming build, it has to be good for something else. If its not good for storage, you cant burn DVDs or CDs… Nothings stopping you from making a new build. Im just telling you that I dont think this is a good build and why. If you cant handle that its not my problem.

“You should make a new build so that I have a chance of winning”
Did you even read what karbin said?

I picked the GPU not for the memory or because it’s 128-bit, the points you keep complaining about as if they’re the only things that matter, but rather because of the clock speed, DX10 support, reviews, and a rebate for a third of the price.
I think the HD doesn’t need to be any bigger and it’s my build. No one has to stick exactly to this build if they wanted to spend another 50 bucks on a larger hard drive.
Lol is not a response.
And your pessimism is astounding. ‘Cause Newegg lets people put up big plastic cubes for sale for $50 without at least checking they do something, right?
And why does it have to be exceptionally good at one thing? The idea I had when making this was that when I got it I would put another 2 gigs of RAM in right away and upgrade the video card when necessary because I knew it wasn’t optimal, as I addressed in a prior comment.

MatressGiant got it right. This build isn’t that great.

BTW, for the people criticizing it, rather than just arguing, try posting specifically which ones you would replace them with (staying under $500 of course), and I’ll ask karbin to change it if I think it’s better.

June 27th, 2008 @10:27 pm

I really don’t like the rainbow thing on that case, it just looks a bit..weird. I’d replace the hard drive with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145162 to get the extra bucks to get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811209012 but that’s just an aesthetic thing.

Wow, right under $500 for that, great job!

Matthewt, those reviews really, really scare me. Why’s everyone hate the rainbow thing anyway? I’m admittedly not that great with aesthetics, but it doesn’t bother me at all.

How the heck did you get that many points? I don’t even know 60 people :p.

Matthew:
#1 Asking friends in real life to vote for me directly and to put up links on their pages asking people to vote
#2 Putting links to this page in my youtube videos.
#3 Just asking people online to vote for me.

#3 Was responsible for about 40 of the votes, and I probably spent 10+ hours total because I tried hard not to be a spammer, and wrote out personalized messages to everyone I asked.
